EPF Wage Ceiling Raised to ₹25,000: What Changes for You
From 17 Sep 2026 the EPF wage ceiling is ₹25,000, up from ₹15,000. More people are covered, PF can rise to ₹3,000 a month and the top EPS pension to ₹12,500.
The EPF wage ceiling is the monthly pay limit (basic + DA) up to which provident fund is compulsory and on which the employer's pension contribution is worked out. From 17 September 2026 it rose from ₹15,000 to ₹25,000 a month, the first change since September 2014. In plain terms: more employees must now be enrolled in EPF, PF deductions for anyone earning above ₹15,000 can go up by as much as ₹1,200 a month, and the highest possible EPS pension rises from ₹7,500 to ₹12,500 a month over time.
This guide shows the exact before-and-after contributions, what the change does to your pension, and what it means for your retirement balance, using the site's EPF calculator for the long-term numbers.
What changed on 17 September 2026
The Union Cabinet approved the higher ceiling on 16 September 2026 and the Ministry of Labour and Employment notified it under the Code on Social Security, 2020, effective the next day. As of October 2026, this is what it means:
- Ceiling: ₹15,000 → ₹25,000 a month of PF wages. "Wages" follows the Labour Code definition (basic + DA + retaining allowance, with allowances above 50% of total pay added back) that has applied since 21 November 2025.
- Statutory PF: 12% of wages up to ₹25,000 from you and 12% from your employer, so up to ₹3,000 a month each (was ₹1,800).
- Employer's pension share (EPS): 8.33% of wages up to the ceiling, now up to ₹2,083 a month (was ₹1,250). The rest of the employer's 12% goes to your EPF account.
- September 2026 payroll: EPFO's FAQs say contributions are split, with 1–16 September on the old ceiling and 17–30 September on the new one. If your employer couldn't recover the extra employee share in September, it may do so in the October payroll.
- Not changed: the 12% + 12% rates and the EPF interest rate (8.25% for FY 2024-25 and FY 2025-26).
Who is newly covered
EPF applies to establishments with 20 or more employees. Until September 2026, someone joining such an employer at a basic + DA above ₹15,000 was not automatically covered. Now, anyone with wages up to ₹25,000 must be enrolled in EPF, EPS and the EDLI insurance scheme. You don't have to apply; enrolling eligible staff is the employer's legal duty.
A second group gains pension cover. Since September 2014, people who joined EPF for the first time with pay above ₹15,000 were kept out of EPS, so the employer's full 12% went to their EPF account. EPFO's FAQs on the new ceiling say such members are to be enrolled in EPS from 17 September 2026 if their wages are below ₹25,000.
Employees joining at pay above ₹25,000 who aren't already EPF members are still not automatically covered, just as those above ₹15,000 weren't before.
How your PF, pension share and take-home change
The table shows monthly contributions for an EPS member whose PF was capped at the ceiling, before and after 17 September 2026. Figures are rounded to the rupee, as EPFO does.
| Basic + DA a month | Your PF (before → after) | Employer EPS (before → after) | Employer EPF (before → after) | Take-home change |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| ₹15,000 | ₹1,800 → ₹1,800 | ₹1,250 → ₹1,250 | ₹550 → ₹550 | None |
| ₹20,000 | ₹1,800 → ₹2,400 | ₹1,250 → ₹1,666 | ₹550 → ₹734 | −₹600 |
| ₹25,000 | ₹1,800 → ₹3,000 | ₹1,250 → ₹2,083 | ₹550 → ₹917 | −₹1,200 |
| ₹40,000 | ₹1,800 → ₹3,000 | ₹1,250 → ₹2,083 | ₹550 → ₹917 | −₹1,200 |
The working for ₹25,000 and above: your PF is 12% × ₹25,000 = ₹3,000; EPS is 8.33% × ₹25,000 = ₹2,082.50, rounded to ₹2,083; the employer's EPF share is ₹3,000 − ₹2,083 = ₹917. For ₹20,000 basic: 12% = ₹2,400, EPS 8.33% = ₹1,666, EPF ₹734.
Look at where the money goes for someone at ₹25,000 or more. Take-home falls by ₹1,200, but the EPF account now gets ₹3,917 a month instead of ₹2,350 (₹1,567 more), and the pension fund gets ₹833 more. In total ₹2,400 more a month is saved for you, half of it paid by the employer.
Two practical points:
- Tax: in the new regime your own PF isn't deductible, so the full ₹1,200 comes out of take-home. In the old regime it counts towards the ₹1.5 lakh 80C limit, so if you aren't already at the limit your tax falls a little.
- CTC: most offer letters include the employer's PF in CTC, so the extra employer contribution may be absorbed within the same CTC. EPFO's FAQs say the employer's statutory share can't simply be recovered from you as a deduction by calling it part of CTC. If your payslip changed in a way you don't understand, ask HR for the working. The in-hand salary table for 10 to 40 LPA and the in-hand salary calculator already use the ₹25,000 ceiling.
If you already contribute on your full basic (₹4,800 a month on a ₹40,000 basic, for example), nothing changes: EPFO has said such members don't need to cut back to the ceiling.
Your EPS pension: ₹15,000 vs ₹25,000 pensionable salary
The employer's 8.33% builds a monthly pension under the Employees' Pension Scheme, 1995, not a lump sum. The formula is:
Monthly pension = pensionable salary × pensionable service ÷ 70
- Pensionable salary is your average monthly wages (capped at the ceiling) over the last 60 months before you leave.
- Pensionable service is your years of EPS membership, counted up to 35 years, plus a 2-year bonus if your total service is 20 years or more.
- You need at least 10 years of service for a monthly pension. It starts at 58; a reduced pension is available from 50. The minimum is ₹1,000 a month.
| Years of service | Years counted | Pension at ₹15,000 | Pension at ₹25,000 |
|---|---|---|---|
| 10 | 10 | ₹2,143 | ₹3,571 |
| 20 | 22 (with 2-year bonus) | ₹4,714 | ₹7,857 |
| 30 | 32 (with 2-year bonus) | ₹6,857 | ₹11,429 |
| Maximum | 35 | ₹7,500 | ₹12,500 |
Example for 20 years: 20 + 2 bonus = 22 years. At ₹25,000: 25,000 × 22 ÷ 70 = ₹7,857 a month. At ₹15,000: 15,000 × 22 ÷ 70 = ₹4,714.
Now the honest caveat. Because pensionable salary is a 60-month average, the full ₹25,000 can only count once you have five years of contributions at the new ceiling, that is, from around September 2031. Someone retiring in 2027 or 2028 will see only part of the benefit. EPFO had not, as of October 2026, published exactly how service before and after 17 September 2026 will be blended; when the ceiling was last raised in 2014, pension was worked out separately for each period. EPFO's FAQs also make clear that existing pensioners do not get an automatic increase. And remember that a pension fixed in rupees buys less every year; see what inflation does to your savings.
Long-term EPF balance: capped at ₹25,000 vs full basic
Here is what the ceiling means for your EPF balance, from the EPF calculator. Example: basic + DA of ₹40,000 a month at age 30, 5% raises every year, retirement at 58, and 8.25% interest every year.
| By age 58 | PF on ₹25,000 ceiling | PF on full basic |
|---|---|---|
| Your PF in the first year | ₹36,000 | ₹57,600 |
| Your total contributions | ₹10,08,000 | ₹33,63,989 |
| Employer's EPF share | ₹3,08,280 | ₹26,64,269 |
| Interest earned | ₹35,67,473 | ₹1,09,42,220 |
| EPF balance at 58 | ₹48,83,753 | ₹1,69,70,477 |
On the ceiling, your contribution stays at ₹3,000 a month for 28 years however much your salary grows, so the balance ends near ₹49 lakh. On full basic, contributions grow with every raise and the balance reaches about ₹1.7 crore. The price is a lower take-home: ₹1,800 a month less in the first year (₹4,800 instead of ₹3,000), rising as your salary rises. The EPS share is ₹2,083 a month in both cases.
Limits of this estimate: the calculator holds the ceiling at ₹25,000 for all 28 years (it stayed at ₹15,000 for 12 years before this change), and assumes interest stays at 8.25%, which the EPFO board sets every year.
Can you contribute more than the ceiling?
Yes, in two ways:
- PF on full basic. You and your employer jointly opt to contribute 12% on wages above ₹25,000. The employer then matches you, but in a CTC-based salary the extra employer share usually comes out of your CTC.
- Voluntary Provident Fund (VPF). You alone contribute more than 12%, up to 100% of basic + DA. The employer doesn't have to match it. VPF earns the same interest as EPF.
One tax rule matters here. Interest on your own contributions above ₹2.5 lakh a year (₹5 lakh if your employer makes no contribution) is taxable. ₹2.5 lakh a year is ₹20,833 a month, which 12% PF alone reaches only at a basic of about ₹1,73,611 a month; heavy VPF can cross it much sooner. Interest on contributions up to the limit stays tax-free. If you want more retirement savings beyond that, compare EPF with other options such as the NPS and its new withdrawal rules (try the NPS calculator) or the PPF calculator.

Frequently asked questions
What does the EPF wage ceiling increase mean for my salary?
If your basic + DA is above ₹15,000 and your PF was capped at ₹1,800, your PF deduction can rise to as much as ₹3,000 a month, so take-home falls by up to ₹1,200. Your employer adds the same amount, so your retirement savings rise by up to ₹2,400 a month.
My basic is ₹22,000 and my employer never deducted PF. What now?
From 17 September 2026 you must be enrolled. Your PF would be 12% × ₹22,000 = ₹2,640 a month; the employer pays ₹2,640 too, of which ₹1,833 goes to EPS and ₹807 to your EPF account.
Will existing EPS pensioners get a higher pension?
No. EPFO's FAQs say the higher ceiling does not mean an automatic increase for existing pensioners or members. Pension still depends on pensionable salary and service at the time you leave.
Does the new ceiling apply to past months?
No. It applies from 17 September 2026. For September 2026, contributions are worked out on ₹15,000 for 1–16 September and ₹25,000 for 17–30 September.
Can I withdraw the EPS money if I leave before 10 years?
You don't get a monthly pension with less than 10 years of service. You can instead take a withdrawal benefit worked out from a table in the scheme, or ask for a scheme certificate that carries your service forward to your next job.
