How to Compress an Image to 20KB (for Online Forms)

"Photo must be less than 20KB." Exam portals and government forms love this rule, and your phone photo is 3MB. Getting to 20KB while keeping the photo usable takes the right order of steps — here it is.

Step 1 — resize the dimensions first

This does most of the work and everyone skips it. A 20KB photo simply can't be 3000px wide. Use the image resizer to bring it down to the exact pixels the form asks for (often around 200×230 for a passport photo).

Step 2 — make sure it's a JPG

Photos compress far smaller as JPG than PNG. If yours is a PNG, convert it with the PNG to JPG converter — that alone can cut the size dramatically.

Step 3 — compress to hit 20KB

Now run it through the image compressor and lower the quality until it's just under 20KB. After a proper resize, you can usually reach 20KB and still have a clear photo. Everything runs in your browser, so ID photos are never uploaded.

If you're still over 20KB

Resize the dimensions a little smaller and compress again. At the tiny sizes forms display, minor quality loss won't be visible. Keep your original photo untouched so you can redo the steps for the next form's different limit.
