Thanks for the feedback!

Enter the original price and the discount percentage, and this discount calculator shows the final price you pay and how much you save. It is meant for quick checks while shopping, whether the tag says 25% off in a Diwali sale or 40% off during an online sale weekend.

How the sale price is worked out

The saving is price × discount ÷ 100, and the final price is the original price minus that saving, which is the same as price × (1 − discount ÷ 100). With the placeholder values, ₹999 at 25% off:

  • Saving: 999 × 25 ÷ 100 = ₹249.75
  • Final price: 999 − 249.75 = ₹749.25

The result box shows the final price in large type, then "You save" and the discount percentage you entered.

Stacked offers are not simply added

"40% off plus an extra 10%" sounds like 50%, but the second discount applies to the already reduced price. On a ₹2,499 pair of shoes, 40% off leaves ₹1,499.40; a further 10% off that leaves ₹1,349.46. The total saving is ₹1,149.54, which is 46%, not 50%. To reproduce it here, calculate once, then enter the new price as the original price for the second discount. The general rule is 1 − (1 − a) × (1 − b):

40% + 10%46%
50% + 20%60%
20% + 20%36%

Reading Indian price tags correctly

  • MRP already includes GST under India's packaged-goods rules, so a discount on MRP needs no tax added at the till.
  • Card offers are often capped. "10% instant discount up to ₹1,500" on a ₹20,000 phone gives ₹1,500, not ₹2,000, which is an effective 7.5%.
  • Multi-buy deals: "buy 1 get 1 free" is 50% off per item and "buy 2 get 1 free" is 33.33%, but only if you actually want every item.
  • Check the starting price. A big percentage off an inflated "original" price can still be a poor deal, so compare the final price with other sellers.

Working backwards

To find the discount percentage from two prices, divide the difference by the original price: a kurta cut from ₹1,999 to ₹1,299 is 700 ÷ 1,999 = 35.02% off. The Percentage Change Calculator does this in one step. To recover the original price from a sale price, divide by (1 − discount ÷ 100): ₹749.25 ÷ 0.75 = ₹999.

This page handles percentage discounts only. For a flat coupon such as ₹200 off, subtract it directly, and remember that it is worth more on a cheap item than on an expensive one. Sellers planning a sale can check what a discount does to their margin with the Profit Margin Calculator.

Frequently asked questions

How do I calculate 20% off a price quickly?
Multiply the price by 0.8. For example, 20% off ₹1,500 is 1,500 × 0.8 = ₹1,200.
Is 40% off plus 10% off the same as 50% off?
No. The second discount applies to the reduced price, so the combined saving is 46%.
How do I find the discount percentage from MRP and the selling price?
Subtract the selling price from the MRP, divide by the MRP and multiply by 100. ₹1,999 reduced to ₹1,299 is a 35.02% discount.
Is GST added after the discount?
Not on retail MRP, which already includes GST. On a business quotation shown before tax, apply the discount first and then add GST to the reduced amount.
How do I work out the original price before a discount?
Divide the sale price by one minus the discount rate. A ₹749.25 price after 25% off came from ₹749.25 ÷ 0.75 = ₹999.
