Thanks for the feedback!

Meta Tag Generator produces the basic tags for the head of a web page: the title tag, a meta description, a mobile viewport tag and a robots tag. It's useful when you are building a page by hand, setting up a simple HTML site, or want a correctly escaped version of a title and description to paste into a template.

What goes in, what comes out

Enter the Page title in the field at the top (it's required) and the meta description in the large box, then press Generate tags. The title is used in full. The description is cut to its first 160 characters, even if that's in the middle of a word, and both are HTML-escaped, so an ampersand becomes & and quotation marks can't break the tag.

With the title "Home Loan EMI Calculator – Monthly EMI & Interest" and a 162-character description, the result is:

<title>Home Loan EMI Calculator – Monthly EMI &amp; Interest</title>
<meta name="description" content="Work out your monthly home loan EMI in rupees, see total interest and download a full repayment schedule. Supports any amount, rate and tenure in years or month">
<meta name="viewport" content="width=device-width, initial-scale=1">
<meta name="robots" content="index, follow">

The description has lost its last two characters and now ends on "month". Rewrite descriptions that end mid-word so the text finishes cleanly within 160 characters.

The four tags explained

  • title: the main source for the clickable headline in search results and the text on the browser tab. Aim for roughly 50 to 60 characters, with the main topic first.
  • description: a summary that Google may show under the title. It doesn't affect rankings, but a clear one can earn more clicks.
  • viewport: tells phones to use the device width rather than a zoomed-out desktop layout. Without it, a page usually looks tiny on mobile.
  • robots: index, follow is what search engines do anyway, so this tag is optional. Change it to noindex for pages that shouldn't appear in results, such as thank-you pages or internal search results.

The generator deliberately leaves out the old meta keywords tag, which Google doesn't use for ranking.

Adding the tags without creating duplicates

  1. Paste the lines inside the <head> section, before </head>.
  2. Check that the page doesn't already have a viewport tag or title; most themes and frameworks include them, and two title tags on one page is a common mistake.
  3. On WordPress, enter the title and description in your SEO plugin's fields (Yoast, Rank Math and similar) instead of pasting raw tags, because the plugin already outputs them.
  4. Give every page its own title and description; reusing one set across a whole site makes pages hard to tell apart in search.

Previewing and extending

To see how the title and description might display in search, try them in the Google SERP Preview first. Social platforms like Facebook, LinkedIn and WhatsApp use separate Open Graph tags for link previews, which the Open Graph Generator creates. A canonical tag is also worth adding if the page can be reached through more than one URL.

Frequently asked questions

How long should a meta description be?
About 150 to 160 characters is a common guideline. This tool cuts descriptions at 160 characters, so keep yours within that limit to avoid a cut-off word.
Do I still need a meta keywords tag?
No. Google doesn't use meta keywords for ranking, which is why the generator doesn't include it.
Why does the ampersand in my title look different in the generated code?
Special characters are HTML-escaped, so & is written as an entity (amp between an ampersand and a semicolon) to keep the tag valid. Browsers and search engines still display a normal ampersand.
Is the robots index, follow tag necessary?
No. Search engines index and follow links by default, so the tag is optional. It's useful mainly when you change it to noindex.
Where do I paste the meta tags?
Inside the head section of the page's HTML. On WordPress, use your SEO plugin's title and description fields instead.
