Thanks for the feedback!
This salary to hourly calculator breaks an annual salary into hourly, daily, weekly and monthly pay, based on the hours you work each week. It helps when comparing a full-time offer with freelance or part-time rates, judging whether overtime pays, or reading a job advert that quotes pay per hour.
The formulas behind each figure
- Weekly = annual salary ÷ 52
- Hourly rate = weekly pay ÷ hours per week (40 if you leave the field blank)
- Daily (8h) = hourly rate × 8
- Monthly = annual salary ÷ 12
With the placeholder ₹6,00,000 a year and 40 hours a week: weekly pay is ₹11,538.46, the hourly rate is ₹288.46, an 8-hour day is worth ₹2,307.69, and the monthly figure is ₹50,000.
40 hours or 48? Choosing the right week
In the United States, 40 hours × 52 weeks = 2,080 paid hours is the standard used to convert salaries. Many Indian offices, shops and factories run six-day weeks of eight hours, which is 48 hours, the usual weekly limit for adult workers under Indian labour law. The same ₹6 lakh salary gives quite different hourly rates:
| Hours per week | Hourly rate | Daily (8h) |
|---|---|---|
| 40 | ₹288.46 | ₹2,307.69 |
| 45 | ₹256.41 | ₹2,051.28 |
| 48 | ₹240.38 | ₹1,923.08 |
The daily figure always assumes an 8-hour day. If your working day is 9 hours, multiply the hourly rate by 9 yourself.
Leave and overtime change the real rate
Dividing by 52 spreads your salary across every week of the year, including paid holidays and leave. If you take four weeks off, you actually work 48 weeks, so pay per hour worked is ₹6,00,000 ÷ 48 ÷ 40 = ₹312.50. Unpaid overtime pushes it the other way: regularly working 50 hours on the same salary brings it down to ₹230.77. Enter the hours you really work, not the hours in your contract, for an honest number.
Comparing with freelance and part-time rates
A freelance hourly rate is not directly comparable with a salaried one. A freelancer has non-billable time for finding clients and doing admin, no paid leave, and pays for equipment and health insurance, while an employee's CTC may include PF and gratuity contributions. Charging only your salaried hourly rate as a freelancer therefore leaves you earning less. As a rough check, if you can bill 25 hours a week for 46 weeks a year and want to match ₹6,00,000, you need 6,00,000 ÷ (25 × 46) = ₹521.74 an hour before expenses. Decide too whether you are converting CTC or in-hand pay: in-hand gives the spendable hourly figure, CTC the cost to the employer. If you only know your CTC, the In-Hand Salary Calculator estimates the take-home pay to use here.
