CSV to Excel Converter

Upload a .csv file and this converter reads it into a spreadsheet and gives you back a real Excel workbook (.xlsx) with every value in its own cell. It is useful when a portal or colleague insists on .xlsx, or when double-clicking a CSV in Excel dumps every row into a single column.

Converting a file

1. Drop a CSV file onto the upload box or click it to choose one. Only one file is converted at a time.
2. Click Convert to Excel. When the message "Your Excel file is ready" appears, click Download result.
3. The workbook keeps your file's name with an .xlsx extension, and all the data sits on one sheet called Sheet1.

The separator does not have to be a comma. Semicolon-separated files (common from European software) and tab-separated files are detected and split correctly too.

What happens to your values

The converter interprets each field rather than copying it as text, which is helpful for numbers but worth understanding for IDs and dates. Take this input:

• Numbers become real numbers. "1,25,000" is stored as 125000 and 2500.50 as 2500.5, so SUM and sorting work straight away.
• Quoted commas stay inside the cell. "Mumbai, MH" lands in a single city cell.
• Leading zeros are dropped. The ids 001 and 002 become 1 and 2. The same happens to phone numbers written as 09876543210.
• Date-like text becomes Excel dates. Values such as 2026-01-15 are converted to Excel date numbers, which may appear as a plain number (around 46000 for dates in 2026) until you give the column a date format. Slash dates are read month-first, so 01/02/2026 means 2 January; a DD/MM date whose day is above 12, like 15/01/2026, stays as text.

Keeping IDs, PIN codes and phone numbers intact

If leading zeros matter, do not rely on automatic conversion. In desktop Excel, use Data › From Text/CSV, click Transform Data and set those columns to Text before loading. Another option is to keep the CSV and bring it into Google Sheets with automatic type conversion switched off. Indian PIN codes never start with 0, but employee codes, roll numbers and account numbers often do.

Hindi, Tamil and other non-English text

Files that begin with a UTF-8 byte-order mark keep Indian-language text and the ₹ sign intact; Excel's "CSV UTF-8 (Comma delimited)" save option adds that mark. A plain UTF-8 file without it can come out garbled, with characters such as "ह" in place of Devanagari. Check your text columns after converting, and if they look wrong, re-save the CSV as CSV UTF-8 and convert again.

When to convert and when not to

Convert to .xlsx when you need to add formatting, formulas, extra sheets or charts, or when an upload form accepts only Excel files. Keep the CSV if the data is headed for a database import or a script, where plain text is simpler.
