Excel to CSV Converter

Upload an Excel file (.xlsx, .xls) and download it as CSV — free and private, nothing is uploaded to a server.

Thanks for the feedback!

Upload an Excel workbook and this converter exports its first sheet as a comma-separated CSV file that you can download or copy. It reads .xlsx, .xls, .xlsm and OpenDocument .ods files, which makes it handy for preparing data for a database import, a bulk upload form or a script.

Step by step

  1. Drop the workbook onto the upload box or click to choose it.
  2. Click Convert to CSV.
  3. Check the Preview box, then use Download result to save a .csv with the same file name, or Copy result to paste the text elsewhere.

The preview shows the first 4,000 characters of large files; the download always contains everything. If the workbook has more than one sheet, a note tells you that only the first was converted.

What ends up in the CSV

A CSV holds plain text only, so the converter writes each cell the way Excel displays it:

  • Formulas are replaced by their last calculated result, as saved in the file.
  • Dates keep their display format, so a cell shown as 15-01-2026 is written as 15-01-2026.
  • Formatted numbers keep their formatting: 1234.5 shown with a thousands separator becomes "1,234.50" in quotes, and a percentage becomes text like 12.34%.
  • Text is kept as it is, including leading zeros in cells stored as text, such as 007.
  • Commas, quotes and line breaks inside a cell are handled by wrapping the value in double quotes and doubling any quote marks, as the CSV standard (RFC 4180) describes.
  • Hidden rows are still exported, and blank rows inside the used range come out as lines of commas.
  • Merged cells keep their value in the first cell only; the other cells of the merge are empty.

Preparing the sheet for a clean export

  • If the receiving system needs plain numbers, set number columns to the General format before converting, so values are not written as "1,234.50" or with a currency symbol.
  • Pick an unambiguous date format such as yyyy-mm-dd for dates that software will read.
  • Remove title rows, notes and totals above or below the table so the first line is the header row.
  • To export a sheet other than the first, drag it to the first position in Excel and save, or copy it into a new workbook.

Opening the CSV again in Excel

The file is saved as UTF-8 without a byte-order mark. Double-clicking it in Excel can therefore show accented or Indian-language characters incorrectly. Import it through Data › From Text/CSV and choose UTF-8 as the file origin, or use the CSV to Excel Converter when you need a workbook again. For structured output instead of CSV, the Excel to JSON Converter reads the same files.

The workbook is opened and converted entirely inside your browser tab, so it is never uploaded to a server.

Frequently asked questions

Which sheet gets converted?
Only the first sheet in the workbook. Move the sheet you need to the first position and save, or copy it into a new workbook, before converting.
Are formulas kept in the CSV?
No. CSV cannot store formulas, so each formula cell is written as its last calculated value.
Why are my numbers in quotes with commas in the CSV?
The cells use a number format with thousands separators, and the converter writes values as displayed. Switch those columns to the General format before converting.
Can I convert old .xls files and LibreOffice .ods files?
Yes. The converter reads .xlsx, .xls, .xlsm and .ods files, and exports the first sheet of each.
Why does the CSV show strange characters when opened in Excel?
The CSV is UTF-8 without a byte-order mark. Import it through Data, From Text/CSV and choose UTF-8 instead of double-clicking it.
