Paste an essay, assignment answer or personal statement and press Count to see six figures at once: words, characters, characters without spaces, sentences, paragraphs and an estimated reading time. It is built for checking a draft against a word limit before you submit, and for spotting paragraphs that have grown too long.
What each of the six numbers measures
- Words: every run of characters between spaces or line breaks. "Well-known", "don't", "2015" and "e.g." each count as one word. A dash typed with spaces around it also counts as a word.
- Characters: everything you pasted, including spaces and line breaks.
- Chars (no spaces): the same total with all spaces, tabs and line breaks removed.
- Sentences: stretches of text that end in a full stop, question mark or exclamation mark.
- Paragraphs: blocks separated by an empty line.
- Reading time: words divided by 200, rounded to the nearest minute, with a minimum of 1 minute.
Worked example: a two-paragraph essay opening
Suppose you paste this introduction, with an empty line between the two paragraphs:
Public libraries are more than buildings full of books. They give students a quiet place to study, free internet and help from trained staff. Yet many towns have cut library budgets since 2015. Is that a sensible saving, or a false economy? This essay argues it is the latter.
The counter reports 49 words, 277 characters, 228 characters without spaces, 5 sentences, 2 paragraphs and a reading time of 1 min. The gap of 49 between the two character figures is the whitespace: 47 spaces between words plus the two line breaks that make the empty line.
Why your count may not match Word or your teacher's
Different programs disagree by a few words on the same text, so treat small gaps as normal. The things that move the number most are predictable:
- Abbreviations and decimals inflate the sentence count. "Dr. Mehta measured 3.5 cm of rain" is split at "Dr." and at "3.", so one real sentence becomes three.
- A final sentence without punctuation is not counted as a sentence, although its words are.
- Single line breaks do not start a new paragraph. If you copied text where paragraphs are separated by one line break instead of an empty line, the Paragraphs figure will read 1.
- Titles, headings, citations and the reference list are counted if you paste them. "(Sharma, 2021)" adds two words.
Working to a word limit
Check your institution's rules before trimming. Many departments exclude the bibliography, appendices and sometimes tables from the limit, and some allow a margin either side of it. If only the main body counts, paste only the main body here.
Some limits you will meet often: the Common App personal statement for US universities allows 250 to 650 words, while the UCAS personal statement for UK universities is capped at 4,000 characters, so for UCAS watch the Characters figure rather than Words. If you need page estimates instead, the words to pages converter turns your total into double- and single-spaced pages.
When you are over the limit, the quickest honest cuts are filler openings ("It is important to note that"), doubled adjectives, and sentences that repeat the previous point in new words. Cutting ten such phrases often saves 50 to 80 words without losing an argument. Your essay text stays in the browser while it is counted.
