GPA Calculator

Calculate your GPA from a list of grade points.

Was this tool helpful?

Thanks for the feedback!

Type the grade points you earned in each course and this GPA calculator returns their average to two decimal places, together with the number of courses it read. It works on any numeric scale, whether your university grades out of 10, as most Indian universities do, or out of 4.0, as US colleges do.

How to enter your grade points

Write the numbers in the Grade points box separated by commas, spaces or new lines, so "8, 9, 7.5, 8.5" and a column pasted from a spreadsheet both work. Press Calculate GPA.

With 8, 9, 7.5 and 8.5, the sum is 33 and there are 4 courses, so the result is 33 ÷ 4 = 8.25 with Courses: 4.

Only numbers are read. Letter grades such as A or B+ are skipped without a warning, so always compare the Courses figure with the number of subjects you meant to enter.

Converting letter grades to points first

Under the UGC's Choice Based Credit System, used by many Indian universities, letters convert like this:

Letter gradeGrade point
O (Outstanding)10
A+ (Excellent)9
A (Very Good)8
B+ (Good)7
B (Above Average)6
C (Average)5
P (Pass)4
F (Fail)0

On the common US 4.0 scale an A is 4, B is 3, C is 2, D is 1 and F is 0, with plus and minus grades in between (B+ is usually 3.3, A− is 3.7). Your own university's handbook is the final word on its table.

Credits: the difference between this average and your SGPA

This calculator gives every entry equal weight. Official SGPA and GPA figures are credit-weighted: SGPA = Σ(credits × grade point) ÷ Σ credits. When your courses carry different credits the two numbers can differ noticeably.

You can still get the credit-weighted figure here by typing each grade point once per credit. Take Maths (4 credits, grade point 8), Physics (3 credits, 9) and a Lab (1 credit, 10):

  • Simple average: enter 8, 9, 10 and the result is 9.
  • Credit-weighted: enter 8, 8, 8, 8, 9, 9, 9, 10 and the result is 8.63, since (32 + 27 + 10) ÷ 8 = 8.625.

The one-credit lab pulls the simple average up by more than a third of a point, which is why a quick average can make a semester look better than your marksheet will. In the weighted version, the Courses figure shows total credits rather than subjects.

CGPA across semesters and percentage conversion

Entering each semester's SGPA gives a correct CGPA only if every semester has the same total credits. If credits differ, repeat each SGPA in proportion to its credits, or use the formula from your university's ordinance. Recruiters and some admission forms ask for a percentage; CBSE's rule is CGPA × 9.5, and universities publish their own formulas, which you can apply with the CGPA to percentage converter.

Frequently asked questions

How do I calculate GPA from grade points?
Add the grade points of all courses and divide by the number of courses. Typing them into the box separated by commas does this and shows the course count as a check.
Does this GPA calculator take credits into account?
No, each number counts once. To weight by credits, type each grade point as many times as the course has credits, for example 8 four times for a 4-credit course.
Can I enter letter grades like A or B+?
No. Non-numeric entries are skipped, so convert letters to points using your university's scale before entering them.
Does it work for a 4.0 GPA scale?
Yes. The tool simply averages the numbers, so 3.7, 3.3 and 4.0 work the same way as points on a 10-point scale.
Is SGPA the same as GPA?
SGPA is the credit-weighted grade point average for one semester. CGPA is the same idea calculated across all semesters completed so far.
