Resize Image in KB (20 KB, 50 KB, 100 KB)

Reduce a photo or signature to an exact KB limit (20 KB, 50 KB, 100 KB) and pixel size for exam and job application forms.

Exam presets use common sizes. Always check the exact KB limit and pixel size in your exam's official notification.

Leave width and height blank to keep the original pixel size.

Thanks for the feedback!

This tool shrinks a photo or scanned signature to a file size limit in KB, and if you want, to an exact width and height in pixels, so it fits the upload box on an exam or job application form. It saves a JPG and shows its pixels, KB and JPEG quality before you download it.

Presets, size boxes and the crop-or-fit choice

After you drop in a JPG, PNG or WebP file, pick a preset. It fills Maximum size (KB), Minimum size (KB, optional), Width (px, optional) and Height (px, optional), and you can edit any of them.

With both sides filled, a fifth box, When width and height are both set, offers Crop to fill the size, which trims the edges equally (best for faces), or Fit inside with a white border, which keeps the whole picture and pads the rest with white (best for signatures). Width and height must be at least 20 px, and the maximum at least 2 KB.

The passport preset is 3.5 × 4.5 cm at 300 dpi: 3.5 ÷ 2.54 × 300 = 413 px wide and 4.5 ÷ 2.54 × 300 = 531 px high. For a passport application itself, follow the passport office's own photo rules. Any transparent area in a PNG becomes white.

What happens when you press Resize image

  1. Pixel size. With both sides filled, the picture is cropped or fitted to that box, never stretched. With one, the other follows the original proportions. With neither, the tool starts from the original resolution.
  2. Quality search. It tries JPEG quality between 5% and 95%, halving the gap eight times, and keeps the highest quality that stays under your maximum.
  3. Shrinking when no size is fixed. If fitting the limit would need quality below 60%, it reduces the pixel dimensions and searches again, for up to ten rounds.
  4. Reaching a minimum. Below your minimum, the tool tries full quality; if that is still too small, it inserts blank comment data just after the JPG header until the file clears the minimum, leaving the picture unchanged.

If a fixed width or height cannot get under the maximum even at 5% quality, an error asks for fewer pixels or a higher limit. Notes under the button, also announced to screen readers, flag padding, a trim of more than 10% of the picture, or enlargement beyond twice the original width or height, which can look soft.

Why a 50 KB limit gives a file of about 48.8 KB

Portals count a kilobyte as either 1,000 or 1,024 bytes. To pass both checks, the tool counts the maximum as 1,000 bytes per KB and the minimum as 1,024. A 50 KB maximum therefore means at most 50,000 bytes, and a 20 KB minimum means at least 20,480 bytes.

The result line reports size in 1,024-byte units, so a file that fits a 50 KB limit shows as 48.8 KB or less (50,000 ÷ 1,024 = 48.83). The minimum must be more than 512 bytes below the maximum, or the tool asks you to widen the range. The file name ends with the size rounded up, such as photo-49kb.jpg.

Test run: a 6400 × 4000 px photo of 1,357 KB

Exam photo (Fit)200 × 230 px, 21.8 KB100%
Exam signature (Fit)140 × 60 px, 10.5 KB with padding100%

The Under 50 KB file is 49,607 bytes, or 48.4 KB, inside the 50,000-byte cap.

For the exam photo, a wide picture (6400 ÷ 4000 = 1.6) had to fill a tall box (200 ÷ 230 = 0.87). Crop kept the middle 3,478 px of the width, trimming 46%, so a note asked to check nothing important was cut. Short of the 20 KB minimum at 95% quality, the tool switched to full quality and reached 29.6 KB. Fit kept the whole scene as a 200 × 125 px strip between white bands. If your face is off-centre, crop around the head and shoulders first with the image cropper.

The signature preset fitted the whole picture into 96 × 60 px with white strips at the sides. Even at full quality that was 7.3 KB, so padding took it to 10,752 bytes (10.5 KB): the 10,240-byte minimum plus a 512-byte margin for portals that measure slightly differently.

Exam rules differ: read your notification first

No preset is an official specification for any exam. The photo and signature figures match the preferred sizes in some bank recruitment forms, such as India Post Payments Bank's November 2025 application guidelines, which also ask for a 240 × 240 px left thumb impression (20–50 KB) and an 800 × 400 px handwritten declaration (50–100 KB). Other recruiters want different pixels, KB ranges, backgrounds or ink colours, and rules change between cycles. Check the notification for your own exam and type its figures into the boxes.

The tool does not check the background, face position or signature style, or add your name and date. To change pixels without a KB target, the image resizer is simpler. Everything runs in your browser: the photo is never uploaded to a server.

Frequently asked questions

How do I reduce a photo to 20 KB for an exam form?
Pick Under 20 KB, or the Exam photo preset if the form also fixes the pixel size, then press Resize image and download the JPG. Before uploading, compare the size and pixels in the result line with your exam notification.
Why is my resized image smaller than the KB limit I set?
The maximum is counted at 1,000 bytes per KB, so a 50 KB cap allows up to 50,000 bytes, which appears as about 48.8 KB when shown in 1,024-byte units. This way the file passes portals that use either convention.
How can I increase a photo size in KB to meet a minimum?
Type the lower limit in the Minimum size box. Quality is raised first, and if the file is still too light, blank filler data is inserted after the JPG header so it crosses the minimum while the picture looks exactly the same.
What is 3.5 x 4.5 cm in pixels?
At 300 dpi it is about 413 x 531 pixels, the size used by the Passport photo preset. If a form gives its own pixel size, enter that instead.
Will my face get cut off if I enter both width and height?
Only with Crop to fill, which trims equally from both sides, or from top and bottom, to match the shape you asked for, and shows a note if more than 10% is cut. Choose Fit inside with a white border to keep the whole picture, or crop an off-centre photo around the face first.
Can I convert a PNG signature to a JPG under 20 KB?
Yes. PNG and WebP files are accepted, the download is always a JPG, and a transparent background turns white. The Exam signature preset fits the whole signature inside 140 x 60 pixels with a white border instead of cutting off its ends.
Why does it say the image cannot get below the limit?
This appears when a large fixed width and height are combined with a very small KB limit. Enter fewer pixels or allow a higher limit and run it again.
Is my photo uploaded anywhere?
No. The resizing and compression happen in your browser on your own device, so the file never leaves it.
