How to Calculate Your Grade (Weighted Grade Explained)
Your homework, quizzes and exams rarely count equally โ each is worth a different percentage of your final grade. That's a weighted grade, and getting it right tells you exactly where you stand. Here's how to calculate your grade.
The weighted grade formula
Multiply each score by its weight, add those up, and divide by the total weight. For example, an 85 worth 30%, a 90 worth 20%, and a 78 worth 50% gives (85ร30 + 90ร20 + 78ร50) รท 100 = 82.5%. The grade calculator does this instantly โ just enter one "score, weight" per line.
Why weighting matters
A simple average treats a 5% quiz the same as a 50% final, which badly misrepresents your grade. Weighting reflects what each assessment is actually worth, so you can prioritise the work that moves your grade the most.
Reading your letter grade
Most scales map 90+ to A, 80โ89 to B, 70โ79 to C, 60โ69 to D, and below 60 to F โ but always check your school's exact cutoffs, which can differ. The calculator shows a letter alongside your percentage as a quick guide.
Planning ahead
If some assessments haven't happened yet, you can work out what you need on them to hit a target. For the specific "what do I need on the final?" question, use the final grade calculator.
