What Do I Need on My Final Exam? (Free Calculator)

Students & Study · Jul 5, 2026 · 10 views

It's the question every student asks before finals week: "What do I need to score to pass — or to keep my A?" You can work it out exactly with three numbers. Here's how.

The three numbers you need

Your current grade, how much the final is worth (its weight), and your target overall grade. Feed them into the final grade calculator and it tells you the exact score you need on the final.

The formula behind it

Needed score = (Target − Current × (1 − Weight)) ÷ Weight, using the final's weight as a decimal. If you have 82% going in, the final is worth 40%, and you want 85% overall, you need about 89.5% on the final.

Reading the result

If the number is above 100%, your target isn't reachable with this final alone — time to talk to your instructor about extra credit or adjust the goal. If it's below 0%, you've already secured your target no matter what. Most results land somewhere in between, giving you a clear score to aim for.

Turn the target into a study plan

Knowing you need 78% is far less stressful than "just do your best". Use the number to prioritise topics and set a realistic study schedule. Track how far away exam day is with the days until calculator.
