YouTube Tags, Thumbnails and Descriptions: 2026 Creator Guide
What YouTube says matters in 2026: titles, thumbnails and descriptions first, tags last. Chapter rules, thumbnail sizes, YPP thresholds and free tools.
On YouTube, your title, thumbnail and description do most of the work of getting a video found. YouTube's own help page says tags "play a minimal role" in discovery and are mainly useful for words people often misspell. So spend your time on a clear title, a thumbnail that reads on a phone, and a description with chapters, then add a few tags at the end.
This guide sets out YouTube's current rules for each piece (checked against YouTube Help in October 2026), the Partner Programme thresholds, and what each free YouTube tool on this site does, including its limits. Start with the YouTube tag generator and description generator if you want a first draft.
What YouTube says matters, at a glance
| Element | YouTube's rule or guidance | Tool on this site |
|---|---|---|
| Title | Up to 100 characters. Put your 1–2 main words in it. | None needed |
| Description | Up to 5,000 characters. Use the first few lines to describe the video. | Description generator |
| Chapters | First timestamp 00:00, at least three in ascending order, each chapter at least 10 seconds. | Description generator (template) |
| Hashtags | Up to three shown near the title. More than 60 on a video and all are ignored. No spaces inside a hashtag. | Description generator |
| Tags | Minimal role in discovery; useful for common misspellings. | Tag generator |
| Thumbnail | 16:9, JPG or PNG, at least 640 pixels wide; 2 MB limit from a phone, 50 MB from a computer. | Thumbnail downloader (for reference) |
Tags: a few, then move on
Tags help YouTube only at the margins: a misspelling ("masala chay"), a Hinglish spelling, or a second name for the same thing. They will not rescue a vague title. Add a handful that describe the video honestly; copying a popular channel's tags that don't match your video does nothing for you.
The YouTube tag generator builds a starting list from your title. It lowercases the title, drops punctuation and words of one or two letters, takes the first eight words as single tags, pairs up to six neighbouring words, and adds "how to", "tutorial" and "best" around the first word. For the title "Masala Chai Recipe: Easy Ginger Tea at Home" it returns:
masala, chai, recipe, easy, ginger, tea, home, masala chai, chai recipe, recipe easy, easy ginger, ginger tea, tea home, how to masala, masala tutorial, best masala
Keep "masala chai", "chai recipe" and "ginger tea", delete pairs like "recipe easy" and "tea home", and add your own misspellings. Two limits to know:
- It does not skip filler words, so the first word matters. "How to Make Masala Chai at Home" gives tags such as "how", "how to how" and "best how". Put your keyword first, or clean up the list.
- It keeps only English letters and digits. A Hindi title gives empty or broken tags, so type Hindi tags by hand.
Descriptions and chapters
YouTube's tips are short: describe the video in the first few lines (that is the part viewers see before "more"), use your one or two main words in both title and description, and add chapters to longer videos. Then add chapters, then links.
The YouTube description generator takes your topic and returns a fixed template: an opening line, a timestamps block, a subscribe line and hashtags. Treat it as a skeleton:
- The timestamps are placeholders (00:00 Intro, 01:00 Main content, 05:00 Tips & tricks, 08:00 Recap). Replace them with the real times from your video, or the chapters will jump to the wrong places.
- Every word of your topic becomes a hashtag. "how to make masala chai at home" gives seven, including #to and #at. Keep two or three relevant ones; YouTube shows up to three near the title.
- For a Hindi topic the sentence keeps the Hindi words, but the hashtag line comes out as a lone "#". Type Hindi hashtags yourself.
- Rewrite the opening line in your own words. It is the same for every video.
Example chapters for a 9-minute chai video, following YouTube's rules (start at 00:00, at least three, in order, none shorter than 10 seconds):
00:00 Why this chai tastes different00:40 Ingredients and quantities02:15 Crushing ginger and spices04:30 Boiling, then adding milk07:10 Straining and serving
YouTube also adds automatic chapters to many videos; chapters you type in the description take priority. Check the length of a long description with the character counter before you paste it.
Thumbnails: size, file limits and what works
YouTube Help currently recommends 3840 × 2160 pixels for video thumbnails, with a minimum width of 640 pixels and a 16:9 shape, uploaded as JPG or PNG. The file limit depends on where you upload from: 2 MB from a phone, 50 MB from a computer. Many creators still design at 1280 × 720, the long-standing 16:9 size, which is fine. If YouTube Studio won't let you upload your own image, check that your account is verified.
If you upload from your phone and the file is over 2 MB, shrink it with the image compressor or scale it to 1280 × 720 with the image resizer; a full 4K PNG with photos in it is often too big.
What makes people click is simpler than any size rule:
- It must read at phone size. Shrink it to about 4 cm wide; if the words blur, use fewer, bigger ones.
- One clear subject, strong contrast, and a face if the video is about a person.
- It must match the video. YouTube's spam policy bans "maliciously misleading" titles, thumbnails and descriptions, and viewers who feel tricked leave quickly.
The YouTube thumbnail downloader shows any video's thumbnail in four sizes: HD 1280 × 720, SD 640 × 480, HQ 480 × 360 and MQ 320 × 180, each with an Open / Save button. Some older or low-resolution videos have no HD version and show a small grey placeholder; use SD or HQ instead. It is handy for recovering your own thumbnail or studying what works in your niche, but other channels' thumbnails are their copyright, so don't reuse them. Sharing, embedding and IDs
- Timestamp link generator: it has no time box. Paste a video link and it shows two examples (start at 30 seconds and at 1 minute) and the rule: add
?t=SECONDSto a youtu.be link. For 4 min 30 s, that is 4 × 60 + 30 = 270, sohttps://youtu.be/VIDEO_ID?t=270. - Embed code generator: gives a standard iframe at a fixed 560 × 315 pixels, which overflows narrow phone screens. To make it fit any width, give the iframe
width: 100%; height: auto; aspect-ratio: 16 / 9;in your site's CSS. - Video ID finder: pulls the 11-character ID from watch, youtu.be, Shorts, embed and live links. It fails if
v=is not the first item after the question mark (for examplewatch?app=desktop&v=…) and on youtube-nocookie links; delete the extra part of the link and try again. - Channel ID finder: works only for links in the /channel/UC… form. For an @handle link it tells you to open the channel's About section and use Share, then Copy channel ID.
Monetisation: YPP thresholds and the earnings estimate
As of October 2026, the expanded YouTube Partner Programme is available in India with two levels:
| Level | Subscribers | Plus one of | What you get |
|---|---|---|---|
| Entry | 500, and 3 public uploads in the last 90 days | 3,000 watch hours in 12 months, or 3 million Shorts views in 90 days | Fan funding (memberships, Super Chat, Super Thanks) and Shopping |
| Ad revenue | 1,000 | 4,000 watch hours in 12 months, or 10 million Shorts views in 90 days | Ad and YouTube Premium revenue sharing |
You also need 2-Step Verification on your Google account, no active Community Guidelines strikes, access to advanced features, and a linked AdSense account.
These numbers are changing. In a post on 10 August 2026, YouTube announced new terms from 1 February 2027: new applicants for ad and Premium revenue will need 8,000 qualified watch hours in the last 365 days or 20 million qualified Shorts views in the last 90 days, and Shorts ad and subscription revenue will go only to creators with 10 million qualified Shorts views in 90 days. Channels already in the programme are not affected by the new entry thresholds, and the fan-funding thresholds stay the same.
The YouTube earnings calculator gives a rough range. It assumes 55% of views are monetised and multiplies by the two rates you enter per 1,000 views. With 1,00,000 views and the default $0.50 and $4, the working is 1,00,000 × 55% = 55,000 views, then 55,000 ÷ 1,000 × $0.50 = $27.50 and × $4 = $220.00. Its boxes are labelled CPM, but CPM is what advertisers pay before YouTube takes its share; what reaches you is closer to RPM, which YouTube defines as revenue per 1,000 views after its share. So type your RPM from YouTube Analytics into those boxes, not an advertiser CPM.
Frequently asked questions
Do YouTube tags still matter in 2026?
Very little. YouTube says titles, thumbnails and descriptions matter more and that tags mainly help with commonly misspelled words. Add a few accurate ones and spend the rest of your time on the title and thumbnail.
What size should a YouTube thumbnail be?
16:9, at least 640 pixels wide. YouTube Help recommends 3840 × 2160; 1280 × 720 also works. Keep it under 2 MB if you upload from a phone (50 MB from a computer), as JPG or PNG.
Why aren't my chapters showing?
Check that the first timestamp is 00:00, that there are at least three in ascending order and that each chapter lasts at least 10 seconds. Chapters are also unavailable on channels with active strikes or on videos that may be inappropriate for some viewers.
How many subscribers do I need to earn from YouTube in India?
500 subscribers (with 3,000 watch hours or 3 million Shorts views) for fan funding, and 1,000 subscribers with 4,000 watch hours or 10 million Shorts views for ad revenue, as of October 2026. New ad-revenue applicants need more watch time or Shorts views from 1 February 2027.
Can I use another channel's thumbnail?
Not in your own video or as your own design; it is their work. Looking at thumbnails for ideas is fine, and so is downloading your own.
