Area Calculator
Calculate the area and perimeter of a rectangle.

Thanks for the feedback!
This calculator multiplies a rectangle's length by its width and, in the same click, gives you the perimeter. If you measured in metres, it also converts the area to square feet, the unit most Indian builders, flooring shops and property listings quote.
What the three results mean
- Area (sq units) is length × width in whatever unit you typed, squared. Enter feet and the answer is in square feet; enter metres and it is in square metres.
- Perimeter is 2 × (length + width) in the original linear unit. It is the figure you need for skirting, fencing, border tiles, cornice or an LED strip around a ceiling.
- In sq ft (if metres) multiplies the area by 10.7639, because one metre is 3.28084 feet and that factor gets squared. Ignore this line if your inputs were already in feet, otherwise you would be converting square feet a second time.
Worked example: a 4.2 m × 3.6 m bedroom
Type 4.2 in Length and 3.6 in Width, then press Calculate area:
- Area = 4.2 × 3.6 = 15.12 square metres
- Perimeter = 2 × (4.2 + 3.6) = 15.6 metres
- Square feet = 15.12 × 10.7639 = 162.75 sq ft
So you would price roughly 163 sq ft of flooring before adding a cutting allowance, and about 15.6 m of skirting minus the width of each door. A 12 ft × 10 ft room measured in feet gives 120 sq ft and a 44 ft perimeter; the "sq ft (if metres)" line would read 1291.67 there, which is exactly the case where you should disregard it.
Rooms and plots that are not simple rectangles
The formula only covers four square corners, but most shapes can be broken down:
- L-shaped room: split it into two rectangles along an imaginary line, calculate each one, and add the two areas.
- Right-angled triangle (a corner cut off a plot): enter the two short sides and halve the area shown.
- Room with a bay or pillar: calculate the full rectangle, then subtract the pillar's footprint calculated the same way.
- Circle: not supported here; use π × radius².
Old walls are rarely perfectly square, so measure the length at both ends of the room and use the larger figure when buying material.
Carpet area vs built-up area in Indian listings
Adding up room-by-room areas measured wall to wall gives you something close to carpet area, the usable floor space that RERA requires developers to disclose. Built-up area adds wall thickness and balconies, and super built-up area adds a share of lobbies, lifts and stairs, so it can be noticeably larger than what you measure inside the flat. Measuring each room yourself is a quick sanity check before you compare price per square foot between projects.
Once you have the floor area, the tile calculator turns it into a tile count, and the area converter handles square yards (gaj), acres and hectares for land.
