Enter your dog's age in years and this calculator converts it into an equivalent human age using a stage-based curve, rather than the old "multiply by seven" rule. Decimals work too, so a six-month-old puppy can be entered as 0.5.
The formula behind the result
Dogs grow up very quickly and then age more steadily, so the calculator uses three stages:
- First year: dog age × 15. A 6-month-old puppy works out to 7.5, shown rounded as 8.
- Second year: 15 plus 9 for the full year, so a 2-year-old is 24.
- Every year after that: 24 plus 5 per year. A 2.5-year-old is 24 + 2.5 = 26.5, shown as 27.
These steps follow the guideline the American Veterinary Medical Association gives for a medium-sized dog: about 15 human years for the first year, about 9 for the second, and roughly 5 for each year after.

The two methods only agree at age 7. The seven-year rule makes young dogs seem like children and old dogs seem older than they are.
Why multiplying by seven gets it wrong
By its first birthday a dog has usually reached close to adult size and can reproduce, which is closer to a human teenager than a seven-year-old child. After that early sprint, ageing slows down. Researchers have also looked at this through DNA: a 2020 study from the University of California San Diego tracked chemical changes in the DNA of Labrador retrievers and proposed human age = 16 × ln(dog age) + 31. That puts a 1-year-old at about 31 and a 3-year-old at about 49. It is based on a single breed and does not work well for puppies, but it backs up the same point: a dog's first few years count for far more than seven human years each.
Size and breed change the picture
The calculator uses one curve for every dog, and it fits medium-sized dogs such as Beagles and cocker spaniels best. Small breeds like Pomeranians and Shih Tzus tend to live longer and age more slowly in later life. Large and giant breeds such as German Shepherds and Great Danes age faster after middle age, so a 10-year-old Great Dane is effectively older than the 64 shown here.
This is useful when planning care. The American Animal Hospital Association's life-stage guidelines treat a dog as senior in the last quarter of its expected lifespan, which arrives years earlier for giant breeds than for toy breeds.
