Thanks for the feedback!

The Slug Generator turns a page title into the lowercase, hyphen-separated text used at the end of a web address, so 10 Best Places to Visit in India (2025 Edition)! becomes 10-best-places-to-visit-in-india-2025-edition. Paste one title per line to convert a whole list of blog posts, products or categories at once.

The steps applied to every line

  1. Everything is lowercased.
  2. Accented letters are reduced to their base letter: Crème Brûlée becomes creme brulee and École becomes ecole.
  3. Any character that is not a to z, 0 to 9, a space or a hyphen is deleted. That removes punctuation, symbols, emoji and underscores.
  4. Runs of spaces and hyphens become a single hyphen, and hyphens at the start or end are trimmed, so --Hello---World-- becomes hello-world.

Each input line produces one slug on the matching output line, which makes the tool handy for bulk imports into WordPress, Shopify or a spreadsheet of redirects.

Examples, including the tricky ones

TitleSlug
How to Apply for a PAN Card Online (Step-by-Step Guide)how-to-apply-for-a-pan-card-online-step-by-step-guide
What's New in PHP 8.3?whats-new-in-php-83
Top 10 Places @ ₹5,000/Nighttop-10-places-5000night
my_file name.txtmyfile-nametxt

Watch the last three rows. Deleted characters are not replaced by hyphens, so the version number loses its dot ("83"), the slash glues "5000night" together and the underscore joins "myfile". If two words are separated only by a symbol, put a space there before converting. Letters that do not break down into a plain letter plus an accent, such as ß, æ and ø, are removed entirely.

Titles in Hindi and other scripts

Only a to z and digits survive, so a title written in Devanagari, Tamil or any other non-Latin script produces an empty line. Search engines do accept web addresses in other scripts (browsers percent-encode them behind the scenes), but this tool cannot create them. Either transliterate the title yourself, for example dilli-mein-ghumne-ki-jagah, or type the slug by hand in your CMS.

Writing slugs that work well

  • Hyphens, not underscores: Google's URL guidelines recommend hyphens to separate words, which is exactly what this tool outputs.
  • Shorten after generating: the tool keeps every word, including "a", "for" and "the". The PAN example above reads fine as apply-pan-card-online, which is shorter to share and easier to remember.
  • Think twice about years: a slug containing "2025" looks dated next year, and changing it later means setting up a redirect.
  • Never change a live slug silently: if a published page's address changes, add a 301 redirect from the old address so links and search rankings are not lost.
  • Keep it unique: two posts with the same title need different slugs; WordPress, for example, adds "-2" automatically, which is worth replacing with a meaningful word.

If you are building a full web address that includes query parameters or spaces, the URL encoder handles the escaping, and the canonical URL generator creates the link tag for the final page.

Frequently asked questions

Can I generate slugs for many titles at once?
Yes. Put each title on its own line and the tool returns one slug per line in the same order.
Why did my Hindi title produce an empty slug?
The tool keeps only English letters, digits and hyphens, so text in Devanagari or other scripts is removed. Transliterate the title into English letters first.
Why are two words stuck together in my slug?
Symbols such as slashes, underscores and dots are deleted rather than turned into hyphens. Add a space between those words before converting.
Does the slug generator remove stop words like a and the?
No, every word is kept. Delete short filler words by hand if you want a shorter address.
Should I use hyphens or underscores in URLs?
Hyphens. Google recommends them as word separators in URLs, and this tool always uses them.
