Thanks for the feedback!

Paste a list of numbers and this average calculator returns the arithmetic mean together with the count, sum, median, lowest and highest values, and the standard deviation. It saves opening a spreadsheet when you want to average exam marks, monthly bills, sensor readings or survey scores.

How to type or paste your list

Numbers can be separated by commas, spaces or new lines, in any mix, so a column copied from Excel or Google Sheets works as it is. Decimals use a point, and negative values are fine. Three input habits cause wrong answers:

  • Thousands separators. "1,234" is read as two numbers, 1 and 234, because the comma is a separator. Type 1234.
  • Currency symbols in front. "₹500" is skipped entirely because it does not start with a digit. Units after the number are harmless ("12kg" counts as 12).
  • Decimal commas. European-style "2,5" becomes 2 and 5.

Check the Count line against the number of values you meant to enter; if it differs, one of the above has happened.

Worked example: five test scores

Enter 72, 85, 90, 64, 85 and the results are:

ResultValueHow it is found
Count / Sum5 / 39672 + 85 + 90 + 64 + 85
Mean79.2396 ÷ 5
Median85middle of 64, 72, 85, 85, 90
Min / Max64 / 90ends of the sorted list
Std deviation9.6623√(466.8 ÷ 5)

For the standard deviation, each score's distance from 79.2 is squared (51.84, 33.64, 116.64, 231.04, 33.64), those squares add up to 466.8, the total is divided by the count, and the square root is taken. With an even number of values the median is the average of the two middle ones.

Population vs sample standard deviation

The figure shown is the population standard deviation, which divides by n. It matches Excel's STDEV.P. If your numbers are a sample drawn from a larger group, statistics courses usually want the sample version, which divides by n − 1 and matches STDEV.S. For the scores above that would be √(466.8 ÷ 4) = 10.8028. The gap shrinks as the list grows.

Mean or median: which average to report

In the example the mean (79.2) sits below the median (85) because one low score pulls it down. That is the pattern to watch for: salaries, property prices and delivery times usually contain a few extreme values, and the median describes the typical case better. The mean is the right choice when every value should count equally, as with the average of your monthly electricity bills for budgeting.

The calculator gives every value the same weight and does not report the mode. For a weighted result such as a CGPA built from credit hours, use the GPA calculator, and for a board-exam percentage across subjects the exam marks percentage calculator is quicker.

Frequently asked questions

Does this calculate sample or population standard deviation?
It gives the population standard deviation, dividing by n, which equals Excel's STDEV.P. For the sample version, divide the sum of squared differences by n minus 1 instead.
Why is the mean different from the median?
The mean is pulled towards extreme values while the median is just the middle item. A large gap between them tells you the data is skewed.
Can I paste a column of numbers from Excel?
Yes. Each line break acts as a separator, so a pasted column is read correctly as long as the cells do not contain thousands commas or currency symbols.
Why is the count lower than the number of values I typed?
Entries that start with a symbol such as ₹ or a letter are skipped. Remove the prefix and calculate again.
How do I find a weighted average?
This tool weights every number equally. Multiply each value by its weight, add those products, and divide by the total of the weights.
