The Italic Text Generator turns ordinary letters into slanted Unicode characters that keep their italic look when pasted into apps without formatting, such as Instagram, LinkedIn posts, X and YouTube comments. "Started my new job in Pune" becomes "๐๐ต๐ข๐ณ๐ต๐ฆ๐ฅ ๐ฎ๐บ ๐ฏ๐ฆ๐ธ ๐ซ๐ฐ๐ฃ ๐ช๐ฏ ๐๐ถ๐ฏ๐ฆ".
How the italic effect is produced
Each English letter is replaced with its equivalent from Unicode's Mathematical Sans-Serif Italic alphabet, which begins at U+1D608 for capital A and U+1D622 for small a. These characters were added to Unicode so that mathematicians could use slanted letters as distinct symbols, but they display just as well in social media text.
The sans-serif set is the practical choice. Its serif counterpart, the Mathematical Italic alphabet, has a gap at small h, because an italic h already existed elsewhere in Unicode as the Planck constant symbol โ. Using the sans-serif set avoids that inconsistency and matches the clean fonts most apps use.
What changes and what does not
- Changed: A to Z and a to z.
- Unchanged: digits, because Unicode has no italic digits; punctuation, spaces and emoji; accented letters such as รฉ and รฑ; and all non-Latin scripts, including Hindi.
So "Hello World 2026!" becomes "๐๐ฆ๐ญ๐ญ๐ฐ ๐๐ฐ๐ณ๐ญ๐ฅ 2026!", with the year and exclamation mark in regular type. In most fonts the difference is barely noticeable next to slanted letters.
Where italics are the right choice
- Titles of books, films, albums and newspapers. Style guides italicise these, and plain-text posts otherwise have no way to do it: "Just finished ๐๐ฉ๐ฆ ๐๐ถ๐ช๐ฅ๐ฆ by R. K. Narayan."
- A quotation or a line of lyrics in a bio or caption.
- Foreign or technical terms that you want to set apart.
- Scientific names of species, which biology convention always prints in italics, such as ๐๐ข๐ฏ๐จ๐ช๐ง๐ฆ๐ณ๐ข ๐ช๐ฏ๐ฅ๐ช๐ค๐ข for the mango tree in a nature or gardening post.
- Gentle emphasis on one or two words, where bold would feel like shouting.
If you are writing in WhatsApp, use its built-in formatting instead: wrap words in underscores, like _this_, and the app displays them in italics while keeping the text searchable. For a heavier look, the bold text generator uses the matching sans-serif bold alphabet.
Trade-offs of Unicode italics
- Search inside apps usually treats ๐๐ถ๐ฏ๐ฆ as different from Pune, so avoid styling words people will search for, and never style hashtags.
- Screen readers can stumble over these characters, so keep essential information in normal text.
- Each styled letter uses two code units, which matters for tight limits such as a 150-character Instagram bio.
The generator applies a single style. To compare italic with bold, small and strikethrough versions of the same text, the fancy text generator shows all four together.
