Thanks for the feedback!
This tool places pairs of PDF pages side by side on a single sheet: pages 1 and 2 on the first sheet, 3 and 4 on the next, and so on. Press Make 2-in-1 and download a new PDF with half as many pages, ready to print handouts, lecture notes or draft copies on half the paper.
How the sheets are laid out
- The odd-numbered page goes on the left and the even-numbered page on the right.
- Each sheet is twice as wide as the first page of its pair and exactly as tall. Pages are not shrunk; the new sheet is simply bigger.
- With an odd number of pages, the last sheet carries the final page on the left and an empty right half.
A 5-page A4 document becomes 3 sheets: pages 1 and 2, pages 3 and 4, and page 5 alone.
What happens when you print on A4
Two portrait A4 pages side by side measure 420 × 297 mm, which is exactly A3 landscape. Print the file on A4 in landscape with Fit to page selected and everything is scaled to about 70.7% (297 ÷ 420). Body text set at 12 point prints at roughly 8.5 point, and 11 point text at about 7.8 point. That is comfortable for slides, notes and proofreading drafts, but tight for dense legal text or small footnotes.
Paper savings add up quickly: a 40-page document becomes 20 sheets, and printed double-sided that is just 10 pieces of paper.
Why build it into the PDF instead of using printer settings
Printer dialogs offer "pages per sheet", but the option is named and placed differently on every computer, and phone printing apps and many print shops print a file exactly as it is. A 2-in-1 PDF looks the same wherever it is opened, so you can send it to a print shop, a colleague or a class group and know the layout will not change.
Getting clean results
- Use pages of one size and orientation. The sheet height comes from the left-hand page of each pair, so a taller right-hand page can be cut off at the top.
- Portrait pages work best. Landscape slides placed side by side make a very wide strip. Two 16:9 slides printed this way on A4 landscape come out only about 15 cm wide each, with empty space above and below.
- Number pages first. Run the document through Add Page Numbers before combining, so each half-sheet still shows its own page number.
- Remove blank pages first. A stray blank page shifts every later pair; take it out with Delete Pages.
The combining is done by your browser, so the document is not uploaded.
