Random Letter Generator

Pick a random letter of the alphabet.

Was this tool helpful?

Thanks for the feedback!

The Random Letter Generator picks one letter of the English alphabet, from A to Z, each time you press Pick letter. There is nothing to type; the letter appears in the result box as a capital, ready to read out or copy. It is built for word games, classroom activities and any moment when a group needs a fair, unbiased starting letter.

How the letter is chosen

All 26 capital letters have exactly the same chance, 1 in 26, or about 3.85%. Each press is independent: the tool has no memory of earlier picks, so the same letter can come up twice in a row, which happens about once in every 26 presses. Awkward letters like Q, X and Z are just as likely as E or S.

The randomness comes from the browser's built-in random number function, which is ideal for games and teaching. It is not designed for security, so do not use it to build passwords; the password generator is meant for that.

Games that need a random letter

Name, Place, Animal, Thing

The favourite pen-and-paper game of many Indian childhoods works perfectly with this tool. Press the button, announce the letter, and everyone writes a name, a place, an animal and a thing starting with it before time runs out. A 60-second round keeps the pace up; the countdown timer can run alongside.

Other word games

  • Category games like Scattergories, where players list items in several categories beginning with the same letter.
  • Pictionary or dumb charades rounds limited to things beginning with a given letter.
  • "I spy" with younger children.

Classroom uses

  • Vocabulary warm-ups: five words starting with the letter in one minute.
  • Alphabet recognition for kindergarten children: show the letter and ask for its sound.
  • Spelling bees and quizzes: choose the letter the next word must begin with.
  • Fair turn-taking: the student whose name starts with the letter, or the nearest letter after it, answers next.

Repeats come sooner than you think

People often feel the tool is broken when a letter reappears after only a few presses, but repeats are normal. The chance that at least one letter repeats is:

Letters pickedChance of a repeat
421.5%
646.3%
758.7%
979.1%

This is the same effect as the birthday paradox. If your game should not reuse a letter, keep a list of letters already played and press again whenever one comes up twice. Groups that find Q, X and Z too hard often agree to skip them the same way.

What it does not do

It picks one capital letter per press. It does not produce lowercase letters, several letters at once, letters from other alphabets such as Devanagari, or letters weighted by how common they are in English. For a random whole word instead, use the random word generator.

Frequently asked questions

Is every letter equally likely?
Yes. Each of the 26 letters has a 1 in 26 chance on every press, including rare letters such as Q, X and Z.
Why did I get the same letter twice in a row?
Each pick is independent, so repeating the previous letter happens about once in every 26 presses. It is not a fault.
Can I stop letters from repeating?
The tool has no memory of earlier picks. Note the letters used and press again if one comes up a second time.
Can it pick a lowercase or Hindi letter?
No. It only returns capital letters from the English alphabet, A to Z.
How do I play Name Place Animal Thing with it?
Press Pick letter, announce the letter, and give everyone a fixed time to write a name, place, animal and thing starting with it.
