Thanks for the feedback!

Instagram Username Generator suggests ten handles built around a word you choose, such as your name, your niche or your shop's name. It's for new creators, small businesses and anyone whose preferred @handle is already taken and who wants a quick set of alternatives to test.

How the suggestions are formed

Type a word and press Generate usernames. Each suggestion places your word between a random adjective (like golden, lunar or retro) and a random noun (like falcon, nova or ranger), joined by underscores and followed by a number between 1 and 99. Spaces, accents and symbols are stripped from your word and it is lowercased, so "Riya Bakes" becomes riyabakes. One run produced:

swift_riyabakes_drift72
cosmic_riyabakes_wolf57
golden_riyabakes_ranger88
urban_riyabakes_nova18

Every press gives a new random set, so keep a note of the ones you like.

Instagram's username rules

  • Up to 30 characters.
  • Letters, numbers, periods and underscores only. No spaces, hyphens or emojis.
  • Unique across Instagram. Handles are not case-sensitive, so RiyaBakes and riyabakes count as the same name.

The length rule matters with long words. The fixed parts of each suggestion take up to 18 characters (the longest adjective and noun are seven letters each, plus two underscores and a two-digit number), so a base word of 12 letters or fewer always fits. With "photographyindia" (16 letters), some suggestions reached 31 and 32 characters, which Instagram would reject; shorten those by dropping the number or one of the words.

Making a generated name your own

The generated names are a raw starting point. For a creator or business account, simpler usually works better:

  • Trim the extras. golden_riyabakes_ranger88 can become riyabakes, riya.bakes or riyabakes.pune.
  • Use a period in place of an underscore. riya.bakes is easier to read aloud than riya_bakes.
  • Add location or category words when the plain name is taken: .pune, .studio, .official, thebakery.
  • Avoid look-alike characters such as a double underscore or a lowercase l next to a 1, which people mistype when searching.
  • Don't imitate another brand. A handle that looks like an existing business or public figure can be reported and removed for impersonation.

Checking availability and staying consistent

This page can't see which handles are taken. In the app, go to Edit profile and type the name into the Username field: Instagram tells you straight away if it's unavailable. If you post on other platforms as well, try to claim the same handle on YouTube, X and Facebook, so followers can find you everywhere. Remember that the username and the display name are separate: the display name can contain spaces and a keyword, such as "Riya | Eggless Cakes Pune", while the handle stays short. The Instagram Bio Generator helps with the text below them, and the general Random Username Generator produces the same style of names for other sites.

Frequently asked questions

How long can an Instagram username be?
Up to 30 characters. With a base word of 12 letters or fewer, every suggestion from this generator fits within that limit.
Which characters are allowed in an Instagram username?
Letters, numbers, periods and underscores. Spaces, hyphens, emojis and other symbols are not accepted.
Does the generator check if the username is available?
No. Type the name into the Username field under Edit profile in the Instagram app, which tells you immediately whether it is taken.
Should I keep the number at the end of the username?
Only if the name is taken without it. Numbers make a handle harder to remember and can make an account look less established.
Can I use a period instead of an underscore?
Yes. Instagram allows both, and many people find periods easier to read and say aloud, for example riya.bakes.
