Remove Numbers from Text

Delete every digit from a block of text.

Thanks for the feedback!

This tool deletes every digit from 0 to 9 in your text and leaves everything else untouched, including the spaces, commas, decimal points, currency signs and hyphens that sat around the numbers. It is useful for stripping page numbers, reference markers, years and codes out of copied text before you reuse or analyse it.

Exactly which characters are removed

  • Removed: the ASCII digits 0 to 9, wherever they appear, including inside words. COVID-19 becomes COVID-, H2O becomes HO, and Batch2025A becomes BatchA.
  • Kept: Devanagari digits (० to ९) and numerals from other scripts, superscripts such as ², fractions such as ½, Roman numerals (they are letters) and numbers written as words.
  • Kept around numbers: ₹, $, %, commas, decimal points and hyphens. ₹1,299.50 leaves ₹,. behind and a phone number like 98765-43210 leaves a lone hyphen.

Worked example and the clean-up step

Input: Refer to page 12 of the 2nd edition3 and Chapter 4.

Output: Refer to page of the nd edition and Chapter .

Notice three things. The footnote marker glued to "edition3" disappeared cleanly, which is the kind of result you want. The ordinal "2nd" lost its digit and left "nd". And each stand-alone number left a double space (or a space before the full stop), because the spaces on both sides of it are still there. Running the output through Remove Extra Spaces fixes the double gaps; stray symbols such as "₹,." need Remove Punctuation or a manual edit.

Where a digit remover earns its keep

  • Text copied from PDFs and e-books: page numbers, footnote and citation markers often end up stuck to words. Removing digits unglues them in one go.
  • Word analysis: when you count word frequency or build a word cloud, years, prices and quantities are noise.
  • Sharing chat logs or reports: stripping digits hides phone numbers, OTPs, account and roll numbers before you forward a screenshot-free copy. Names, email addresses and UPI IDs with letters in them still remain, so read the result before sharing.
  • Separating codes: reducing SKUs or batch codes to their letter parts makes it easier to group them by prefix.
  • Numbered headings: 1. Introduction and 2.3 Scope turn into . Introduction and . Scope. A second pass through a punctuation remover, or a quick manual edit, leaves plain headings you can reuse in a new document.

What this tool will not do

It cannot remove only certain numbers, such as phone numbers while keeping prices; every digit goes. It also does not delete number words like "twenty" or ordinal suffixes like "th". If you actually want the numbers and not the words, Extract Numbers pulls each number out onto its own line instead.

Frequently asked questions

Does it remove Hindi or Devanagari digits?
No. Only the ASCII digits 0 to 9 are removed, so numerals in other scripts stay in the text.
Why are there double spaces after removing numbers?
The space before and after a stand-alone number both remain once the digits are gone. Run the text through an extra-space remover to tidy it.
Can I remove only phone numbers and keep other numbers?
No. The tool removes every digit it finds, so it cannot target one kind of number.
Are decimal points, commas and the rupee sign removed too?
No. Only digits are deleted, so symbols that were part of a number are left behind.
How do I keep the numbers and remove the words instead?
Use Extract Numbers, which lists every number from your text on its own line.
