Thanks for the feedback!
The Strikethrough Text Generator draws a line through your text using a Unicode combining character, so Sale becomes S̶a̶l̶e̶. Because the line is part of the text itself, it survives copy and paste into places with no formatting options, such as Instagram captions, bios, X posts and profile names.
How the strike is added
After every character you type, the tool inserts U+0336, the combining long stroke overlay. Your device draws that mark across the character before it. Two details follow from this:
- Spaces are struck too, so the line runs continuously across a whole phrase rather than breaking between words.
- Your character count doubles. "Sale" is 4 characters before and 8 after. An Instagram bio allows 150 characters, which leaves room for only about 75 struck-through ones.
Known problems with emoji and line breaks
The tool adds the stroke between every code unit, and most emoji are stored as two code units. Putting the stroke between the two halves breaks the emoji, which then shows as question-mark boxes. Type your text, convert it, and add emoji afterwards.
A stroke is also added after each line break, so it lands at the very start of the next line with nothing to attach to. Depending on the app you may see a small stray mark there. Converting one line at a time avoids it.
Native strikethrough is often the better choice
Several apps have built-in strikethrough that looks cleaner and is read correctly by screen readers:
| App | What to type |
|---|---|
| ~text~ | |
| Discord, Reddit, GitHub (Markdown) | ~~text~~ |
| Word, Google Docs | Strikethrough button or menu |
Use this generator where no such option exists: Instagram captions and bios, X posts, Facebook posts, LinkedIn headlines and most profile name fields.
Popular uses, and one caution
- Price drops: showing an old price struck through next to the new one in a caption, such as a struck-through ₹1,999 followed by ₹999.
- Humour: the "self-correction" joke, where the struck word is the honest one and the replacement is the polite one.
- Plain-text to-do lists: marking finished items in notes apps that do not support formatting.
- Showing edits: making clear that a statement in a pinned comment or bio has been withdrawn or updated.
The caution: screen readers do not announce the strike, and some read out each combining mark. For a price cut, write "was ₹1,999, now ₹999" somewhere as well so the meaning is not lost. For other decorative styles, the underline text generator works the same way, and the fancy text generator shows several styles together.
