Underline Text Generator

The Underline Text Generator adds a line beneath your text using a Unicode combining character, so Sale ends today becomes S̲a̲l̲e̲ ̲e̲n̲d̲s̲ ̲t̲o̲d̲a̲y̲. The underline is part of the characters themselves, which means it stays in place when you paste it into apps that have no underline button at all, including WhatsApp and Instagram.

How the underline is built

After each character you type, the tool inserts U+0332, the combining low line. Your device draws that mark under the preceding character, and neighbouring marks join into a continuous line. Because spaces receive the mark too, the underline runs unbroken across a whole phrase rather than stopping between words.

The trade-off is length: every character becomes two. A 15-character phrase is 30 characters after conversion, which counts against limits such as the 150-character Instagram bio or a short display-name field.

Where Unicode underline is the only option

WhatsApp supports bold, italic, strikethrough and monospace through symbols, but it has no underline format. Instagram captions and bios, LinkedIn headlines and most profile name fields have no formatting at all. In those places, combining characters are the only way to show an underline. Typical uses include:

• highlighting a date, venue or deadline in a group announcement;
• marking the key line of a bio, such as a shop's opening hours or a booking number;
• headings inside long plain-text posts, where bold alone looks heavy;
• quiz and worksheet text shared as messages, where students fill in or focus on the underlined word.

In Word, Google Docs and email editors, use the real underline button instead; it looks cleaner and is read correctly by assistive technology.

Problems to expect

• Emoji break. Most emoji are stored as two code units, and the tool inserts the underline mark between them, turning the emoji into boxes. Convert the text first and add emoji afterwards.
• Indic scripts may render badly. In Hindi and similar scripts, the mark is inserted between a consonant and its vowel sign or joining mark, which can split conjuncts. Test the result before sending.
• Line breaks pick up a stray mark. A low line is added after each line break too, and it may appear at the start of the next line.
• Search and screen readers. Underlined text may not match normal searches, and screen readers may ignore the line or read the marks aloud. Keep essential details, like phone numbers, in plain text as well.
• Underline suggests a link. On many screens underlined text looks clickable, so readers may tap it expecting to open something.

Combining with other styles
