Thanks for the feedback!

Upside Down Text makes your message look as if it has been rotated 180 degrees, so Happy Birthday Riya? becomes ?ɐʎᴉɹ ʎɐpɥʇɹᴉq ʎddɐɥ. The result is made of ordinary Unicode characters, so it can be pasted into WhatsApp, Instagram, comments and display names for a playful twist.

How the flip is done

There is no "rotate" setting for text in most apps, so the tool builds the effect in three steps:

  1. All letters are converted to lowercase.
  2. Each letter a to z is swapped for a character that looks like it turned upside down.
  3. The entire string is reversed, because a rotated line is read from what used to be its end.

The substitutions come from several Unicode blocks, mostly the International Phonetic Alphabet, plus a few ordinary letters that already look like each other upside down:

a ɐ   b q   c ɔ   d p   e ǝ   f ɟ   g ƃ
h ɥ   i ᴉ   j ɾ   k ʞ   l l   m ɯ   n u
o o   p d   q b   r ɹ   s s   t ʇ   u n
v ʌ   w ʍ   x x   y ʎ   z z

Letters such as o, s, x and z look the same either way. The letter l is left as it is.

What does not get flipped

  • Capitals: they are lowercased first, so a name loses its capital letter.
  • Digits and punctuation: these are moved by the reversal but not turned over. Hello World! 123 gives 321 !plɹoʍ ollǝɥ, with the digits still upright and the exclamation mark not changed to an inverted ¡.
  • Other scripts and emoji: Hindi letters and emoji are reversed in position only. Emoji made of two code units can break during the reversal, so add them after converting.

With several lines, the order of the lines is reversed as well, so the last line appears first. That matches a genuine 180-degree rotation of the whole block.

Where it works well

  • birthday and festival wishes with a twist;
  • jokes about the southern hemisphere or a day that turned everything upside down;
  • quiz questions whose answers are shown upside down, like the answer keys in puzzle books;
  • eye-catching display names and short bio lines.

Limits to keep in mind

Most modern phones display all of these characters, but the turned i (ᴉ) and a few others may show as boxes on older devices, so check how it looks for your audience. Screen readers read phonetic symbols poorly or not at all, and search features will not find flipped words, so never flip anything people need to read or look up, such as a shop name or a phone number. For a simple backwards effect without character substitution, use the Text Reverser; for other decorative styles, try the fancy text generator.

Frequently asked questions

Why are my capital letters gone in the flipped text?
The tool lowercases everything before flipping, because it only has upside-down versions of the small letters a to z.
Why are the numbers not upside down?
Digits and punctuation are reversed in position but not turned over. Only the letters a to z are replaced with flipped look-alikes.
Can I flip text back to normal?
Running the result through the tool again does not restore it, because the flipped characters are not in its conversion list. Keep your original text if you need it.
Does upside down text work on WhatsApp and Instagram?
Yes. The output is plain Unicode text, so it can be pasted into messages, captions, comments and bios.
Why does one letter show as a box?
The viewer's device lacks a font containing that character, most often the turned i on older phones.
